Allow us to explain1. ValuesValues are personal and specific. You may not hold the same values as the next person. Thats why its important that you identify what you hold in the highest regard and allow those values to guide your decision-making. In an ideal work setting, your values align with the values of the organiza tion and leadership. Even if you cant quite identify what you value the most, knowing the things that have little value to you can provide you with clues about what you should look for in a job opportunity2. InterestsInterests cause your eyebrows to raise. Interests light a fire in you and compel you to learn more and do more. If youre interested in the subject matter at work, motivation comes easy. Genuine interest will also keep you fueled when putting in extra time and effort at the office for whatever reason. Ultimately, interests can keep you engaged in a career over the long haul.3. SkillsWith training and practice, you can likely learn to do most straightforward tasks, especially if youre an intelligent and naturally motivated person. You are not born with skills, but you are born to learn new skills. Identifying your specific skills allows you to look for opportunities to transfer them to new arenas anf apply them in new and different ways. Taking stock of the skills you pos sess can alsoassist you in identifying theskills you want to add to your personal toolkit.4. AbilitiesAbilities come easily to you, without any real effort. When you work within your natural abilities, you often find yourself in the zone you know, those moments when youre working and you lose track of time because you get so caught up in your work.Your abilities range from physical, to interpersonal, to intellectual, and they set you apart from the pack. Everyone has natural abilities dont waste your talentIt must be said that you can work in a position that doesnt line up with your VISA and still be happy and successful. If you arent certain what those are, consider taking an assessment and/or working with a career coach tohelp you uncover those pi eces of yourself. With the new knowledge about your VISA, you can outline a career path that suits you best. Now is your chance to daydream. Map out your perfect position down to every last detail. You deserve it.And once you know what that perfect position is, leverageyour VISA to go out and get it.

5 tips for when you dread a difficult conversation with an employee

5 tips for when you dread a difficult conversation with an employee5 tips for when you dread a difficult conversation with an employeeRecently a client told me that while she was having a discussion with a direct report about a violation of the dress code the person erupted, quit on the spot and immediately left the office. My client was new to zu sich role and this set back wreaked havoc on her confidence. Together we role played the conversation and how to depersonalize it.What I found most interesting is that the company rehired the person who had abandoned the workplace. The very day she walked off the job she assumed abedrngnisher leadership role in another location. What???Now my client must manage a team who knows the organization will tolerate unprofessional and insubordinate behavior. She must gain respect from a team who knows they dont have to listen or adhere to company policy to keep their job. And she is asking herself what just happened because she used to like her job .We are now positioning her transferable skills for a position in a company where people live the values that hang on the wall. You can learn more about how to define, grow and position your transferable skills for advancement here. In the meantime this is what I shared with her on how to prepare for a difficult conversation with an employee.1. Get out the company policy or company value they are violatingSeek alignment and understanding.2. Open the discussion with curiosityTell them you understand how they might not be thinking about this policy/value (builds alignment) and ask them if they knew about it. Show them the document. At that point they will see where you are going with the conversation and begin to comment.3. If they become argumentative make the discussion be about their behavior versus the policy not them versus youRemove yourself from the equation. No emotion. It is them versus the document them versus the values/policy of the organization.4. Listen. Affirm. Be fir m on the ruleIf they get defensive and the conversation is not moving forward, ask them if they were you what would they do.5. In the end remind them this isnt personalThank them for their consideration and cooperation in respecting the policy/value. As employees we all have to align with the goals and values of the organization.

What Geoffrey Owens Teaches Us About the Art of Work Ethic

What Geoffrey Owens Teaches Us About the Art of Work Ethic What Geoffrey Owens Teaches Us About the Art of Work Ethic Last month, when photos of TheCosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens working at Trader Joes went viral, the country reacted with mixed emotions. While some began job-shaming Owens, others praised him for his unapologetic work ethic and grit. Many fellow members of his acting community came out in support, sharing their own stories of holding similar positions in between acting roles. Chris Rankin, who appeared in the Harry Potter series, voiced that hed held a kitchen position after the film franchise came to an endI needed a job, no shame in that. And you know what? I really enjoyed it You do what you need to do and thats nothing to be ashamed of.For a short time, ur nation was perplexed by Owens. The images of him working his typical shift at Trader Joes, frequently cited as a great place to work, sparked conversations about the gig economy, side hustles, and the value o f good, honest work. The fewwho did publicly shame Owens called his gig a step down.According to multiple media sources, Owens wasnt just working at Trader Joes. He has been actively teaching and acting as well. His job at Trader Joes was the means to do what he truly loved, and the way he defended his employer and stood proud of his work was endearing. Theresmuch we can learn from the way Owens approached his work at Trader Joes and his unapologetic attitude when photos of him bagging groceries went viral. There are now mora than 16 million Americans doingcontingent or alternative work, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Side hustles and temporary gigs are clearly changing the employment ecosystem. As alternative work arrangements become the norm, we can all look to Geoffrey Owens to learn a thing or two about thriving in this new environmentLesson 1 Define Your HustleLong after he played the role of Cliff and Clair Huxtables son-in-law on The Cosby Show, Owens has remained dedicated to his passion for acting and teaching. Hehas built a distinguished career as an actor, director, and teacher in theater, television, and film, according to his website. When the photo went viral, Hollywood largely came to Owens defense. Thats because most actors could easily landsee that Owens gig was a means for him to pursue the things he loved to do while making ends meet. Its a strategy wed all do well to mimic. Ask yourself What do I love to do, and how will I piece together the gigs and side hustles I need to make it happen?Lesson 2 Stay PresentFor agig worker, it can be tough to switch from one job to another to another. The key to a successful gig career is the ability to stay present and be engaged in one gig at a time. When youre at one gig, it should seem like that is the only place you want to be.Owens made it known that his work at Trader Joes ensured he could support his family financially, and the job fitwell with his schedule as a father and teacher. His o bvious commitment to his job and pride in the work he did made it clear he wasnt simply collecting a paycheck. Itwas easy for many to admire his hustle and grit because it was obvious he appreciated his work for what it was.Lesson3 Take the Opportunity to Build Transferable SkillsOwens, perhaps unknowingly, was building his network and his skill set while at Trader Joes. From interacting with customers topursuing a meansto his end goal, he was contributing in a big way to his future career. Over the last few weeks, Owens has been offered more new acting gigs than he can handle - a happy ending, so to speak. In most situations, however, its up to gig workers to leverage their newly acquired skills to land even better gigs in the future.- To conclude, no matter why Owens chose to work at Trader Joes, he remained authentic to himself throughout the process. He was unapologetic about and proud of his employer, and he remained confident in his work. He truly embodies the spirit of doing what needs to get done - and what employer wouldnt want to hire a hard worker with grit and a goal?Kimberly Schneiderman is senior practice development manager atRiseSmart.
